Quality over Quantity: Nonmarket Values of Restoring Coastal Dunes in the U.S. Pacific Northwest

چکیده

We design a choice experiment to examine public preferences for coastal dune ecosystem restoration in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Dunes are good whose natural state is now rare. Respondents asked choose among hypothetical projects that vary by project size, quality, recreation access, flooding risk, and cost. Restoration quality defined as closeness ecosystem. find increasing results significantly higher welfare gains than size of area. Maintaining access preferred, programs with restrictions yield positive willingness pay only if accompanied highest quality.

Coastal foredune evolution: the relative influence of vegetation and sand supply in the US Pacific Northwest.

Biophysical feedbacks between vegetation and sediment are important for forming and modifying landscape features and their ecosystem services. These feedbacks are especially important where landscape features differ in their provision of ecosystem services. For example, the shape of coastal foredunes, a product of both physical and biological forces, determines their ability to protect communit...

Impacts of Climate Change on Coastal Erosion and Flood Probability in the Us Pacific Northwest

A simple total water level (TWL) model is employed to investigate the relative importance of various climate controls on the potential for an increased probability of coastal erosion and flooding on sandy beaches of the US Pacific Northwest. Model results suggest that if decadal-scale increases in storm intensity (wave height) continue into the future, this process will have a greater impact on...

Community clusters of tsunami vulnerability in the US Pacific Northwest.

Many coastal communities throughout the world are threatened by local (or near-field) tsunamis that could inundate low-lying areas in a matter of minutes after generation. Although the hazard and sustainability literature often frames vulnerability conceptually as a multidimensional issue involving exposure, sensitivity, and resilience to a hazard, assessments often focus on one element or do n...

Cooperative Second-generation Breeding in the Us Pacific Northwest

The question has arisen whether to use “backwards” selections (i.e. tested parents), “forwards” selections (in this case, mainly untested progeny from openpollinated tests), or a combination of parents and progeny, both in seed orchards and in breeding. Those are the three main options currently available for cooperative breeding programs and seed orchards in the US Pacific Northwest. Which opt...
